There’s no need to sell CDs.  You can just give recordings away.  That’s what U2 is doing with their new release Songs of Innocence.  The catch?  It’s only available on iTunes and only through October 13th.

Which also means the recording won’t qualify for a chart position or get recognized by the RIAA as gold or platinum.  And the band really doesn’t care.

What matters?  Licensing, touring, and merchandising.
